Talking with your scissors sharpener.

Sharpeners will exuberantly chat about the logic of their sharpening methods, then several minutes later, you say to yourself, OMG, I only wanted to know why my scissors aren't feeling right. The both of you are attempting to achieve the same outcome. The majority of stylists are concerned with a quick solution. That is to simply sharpening their scissors edge.

Imagine your customer requesting that you cut their hair so the left side stops flipping up. Simple enough, when you understand the hairs natural tendencies and the styling habits of the customer. Being the best at what you do means guiding customers to use appropriate styling techniques and products once they leave the salon. For some customers this is an ongoing process with each salon visit, ultimately resulting in success.

Some solutions require customer participation, particularly when it might only entail adjusting a modest daily routine.

Hair Stylist

Sharpening scissors is the mirrors image of the stylist resolving the flipping hair paradigm.

Detecting that the scissors have become dull, or that they bend, grab, or pinch the hair is not puzzling, it is physical damage. Any of these issues can be caused by normal use, a damaging nick from being dropped, a slight abrasion from catching a combs tooth, or an improper sharpening. Another consideration is whether the stylist adheres to Basic Career Disciplines. Which are adjusting the scissors tension, using a relaxed hand while cutting, and maintaining a proper edge.

Are you willing to take advice from your sharpener?

Although most sharpeners are not licensed to cut hair, their understanding of scissors is valuable. In an off the record conversation sharpeners will admit that the underlying cause of most scissors damage is related to haircutters ignoring Basic Career Disciplines.

When an evaluation of a scissors damage is not considered normal, particularly when it could have been avoided, it is the sharpeners' responsibility to locate the source. This issue is not a challenge to a stylist's creative abilities when discussing Basic Career Disciplines. It is to reaffirm what is recognized as common practice for using scissors.

When the haircutter and sharpener merge viewpoints for a successful outcome, it is best.

Is it permissible for a sharpener to provide recommendations regarding tension settings, thumb pressure, and daily maintenance? Absolutely.

The need for a shared understanding of how scissors function is necessary to ensure that they can meet the user’s expectation. The sharpener understands the importance of all the scissors' components and how holding or maintaining them can have a positive or negative effect on their performance.

By addressing each scissors issue together, it can result in straightforward resolutions, then the probability of a recurrence will be significantly reduced.

The sharpener's expertise will benefit the haircutter's ability to create the ideal haircut, and the sharpening service has become a more valuable resource.
