Why So Much Fuss About Finger Ring Inserts?

So, there is much to fuss about; finger ring inserts are not just a colorful accessory to be used in promoting scissors to visually stimulate a customer. Sadly, ring inserts are being used as a substitute from learning appropriate scissors holding methods.

This sets a low standard, and it should not be accepted as normal. All aspects of using scissors proficiently are intimately connected, not only for the limitless creative possibilities, but for the avoidance of repetitive stress injuries that plague the haircutting industry.

Allow significant time and thought to match the scissors handle to your hand. As it has an enormous impact on your ability to cut hair. This information could be beneficial to overcome difficulties you have encountered with radial and directional scissors movements from innocently using ring inserts incorrectly.

Let's rename the thumb ring insert to"ThumbTouch Ring."

Most stylist when appropriately informed would eliminate the use of finger ring inserts, unless absolutely needed. The insert’s intended purpose is to assist the stylist with small fingers to master their upper hand control.

This mastery would entail having fingers that feel secure, yet relaxed, and never tightly inserted in the scissors finger rings. Then the thumb can easily touch its ring, effortlessly opening and closing the blade. Making it less likely to place any pressure on the blades.

If the thumb enters the finger ring, more than one-eighth inch, it disrupts the natural smooth glide of the blades, and its accuracy is affected.

Why? Because when the thumb slips into the ring it flexes, applying pressure that interferes with the gap between the blades. The quality of the haircut is immediately diminished.

The misguided habit of inserting the finger and thumb into the scissors ring is usually an overcompensation caused by a loose tension setting.

The other considerations are when handles are inadequately suited to the hand size or have large finger rings needing multiple inserts which forces the handle to fit the hand.

Red flag issues such as these make haircutting more challenging and are remedied when being dedicated to Basic Career Disciplines.

When an insert is necessary, place one in the finger ring first. Seeking to make the scissors feel stable within the upper hand. The finger should be secure in the ring, yet loose enough to be easily removed, such as when removing a wedding ring.

By utilizing a constant, slight downward push with the small finger against the finger rest, the handle is securely positioned under the other fingers. The weight of the scissors is evenly distributed across all the fingers, allowing the thumb to easily move the blade.

The purpose of using a ring insert in the thumb ring is to allow only the tip of the thumb to touch the outer portion of the ring without pushing against it. A secure, comfortable, and balanced feel is the objective.

The thumb should not penetrate or be tight in the insert, as that would restrict any radial, and directional blade movements. Additionally, when the thumb slips within the ring, it flexes as it moves and initiates a micro gap between the blades. This dulls the blade prematurely, creates a crunchy sensation while cutting, and wears on the thumb.

Continuing to apply thumb pressure while using inserts is a net zero gain. Nothing would have been changed, except the rings had smaller holes. The horizontal thumb pressure is still affecting the blades edge and stressing the thumb.
