One minor modification created a colossal shift in the scissors industry. The simplicity of shortening the length of the thumb ring on the handle invented the offset feature and it offered new benefits to scissor design. What was so remarkable? The offset handle was the first step in attempts to relieve thumb stress. This not only aided the haircutter’s thumb, but it helps avoid pressure on the blades of the scissor. Ergonomic handles provide relief from work-related injuries and extends the expected accuracy of a scissors edge.
 
The consequence of the offset handle is it initiates a natural drop of the elbow which prompted a flatter wrist. As this design evolved, the thumb ring position was placed even closer to the pivot, dropping the elbow tighter to the side of the body, delivering a more anatomical hand position.
